William Faulkner (1897-1962)

No one has a better sense of the Native American, African-American and Southern white language than Faulkner. His South is now a vanished world that remains alive in his novels and stories.  He can be somewhat difficult to read unless you are willing to become acquainted with the mind of the post- Civil War South. His characters can seem somewhat confusing and duplistic in their demeanor because they, like those of Truman Capote, inhabit a gothic world wherein the truth is a fragile entity. Several of Faulkner's ancestors and family members also published books. Like him, they wrote about the South and local history.  Although Faulkner's reputation has diminished somewhat in recent years, he remains one of the most influential writers of 20th century America.
