James T. Farrell (1904-1979)

Like Erskine Caldwell, Farrell was also involved in workers' rights and was active in various Socialist and Workers party politics. His Realist novels center on the Irish Americans living in Chicago's South Side during the 1940s. He is best remembered for the Studs Lonigan trilogy, the first book of which, Young Lonigan, was his first novel. Farrell never shied away from political commitment, having belonged to both the Socialist Workers Party and the Trokskyites. He is reputed to have had an enormous influence on novelist Norman Mailer, and evidently journalist Studs Terkel took that name as an homage to the Lonigan books. His writing is eminently readable and his characters remain fresh and vital.
