Erskine Caldwell (1903-1987)
Born in Georgia, Caldwell is best remembered for his novel Tobacco Road, his marriage to and collaborations with Margaret Bourke-White, and the attention surrounding the court trial subsequent to the publication of God's Little Acre. For a few years in the 1930s, he was the co-owner of a bookstore in Maine but after the war, took up residence in San Francisco. Caldwell was, like Steinbeck, a Realist writer, with a strong blue collar identification. His portraits of poor whites and blacks in the American South provided a vehicle for many Americans of his generation to examine race relations in this country.
